Basic Pre- and Post-Workout Stretching and Injury Prevention Tips

Stretching before and after exercise plays a crucial role in injury prevention and improving workout performance. It enhances muscle flexibility, promotes blood circulation, and alleviates muscle tension and fatigue. Learn the correct stretching methods, important precautions, and easy-to-follow basic movements.

Pre-Workout Stretching (Dynamic Stretching)

Purpose

To warm up muscles and joints and optimize readiness for exercise, reducing the risk of injury.

Key Movements

  • Arm Circles: Extend arms sideways and make small, smooth circles 8 times clockwise and 8 times counterclockwise to loosen the shoulder joints.
  • Leg Swings: Hold onto a wall or chair for balance and swing one leg forward and backward or side to side 10 times to prepare the hip and leg muscles.
  • High Knees: Run in place while lifting knees to chest height, raising lower-body muscles and heart rate.

Post-Workout Stretching (Static Stretching)

Purpose

To relax tight muscles, increase flexibility, aid recovery, and reduce muscle soreness.

Key Movements

  • Hamstring Stretch: Sit on the floor with one leg extended and slowly lean forward to stretch the back of the thigh for 15-30 seconds.
  • Elbow Pull: Extend one arm forward, and use the opposite hand to pull the elbow for a shoulder stretch, holding 15-30 seconds.
  • Calf Stretch: Stand facing a wall, place one foot back with the heel down, and stretch the calf for 15-30 seconds.

Precautions

  • Perform dynamic stretching for 5-10 minutes before exercise, moving smoothly without rushing.
  • Do not start static stretching immediately after exercise; cool down with 5-10 minutes of walking or light cardio before stretching.
  • If any pain occurs during stretching, stop immediately and reduce intensity. A gentle pulling sensation is sufficient.
  • Keep breathing deep and regular to help muscle relaxation.
  • Stretch both sides evenly to prevent muscular imbalance and injury.

Important Notice

If injuries are severe or recovery is unstable, consult a medical professional immediately for accurate diagnosis and treatment. This information is general and may vary by individual; professional advice is recommended.
